What is Psoriasis?

  • Psoriasis is a noncontagious skin disorder.
  • It produces red colored papules which form plaques when merged together.
  • It leads to thickening, hardening and scaling of skin.
  • Causes dry flaking of skin due to excessive production of skin cells triggered by abnormal production of lymphocytes.
  • Psoriasis usually is more concentrated in skin of the elbows, knees, and scalp.
  • It is milder in some people and appears as small, faded dry patches all over the skin and hardly anybody can tell that the person is suffering from this condition.
  • In severe cases Psoriasis covers the entire body with dry patches and skin looks excessively dry and patchy.
  • It causes red, thick and scaly skin in extreme cases.
  • It is usually considered incurable and a chronic skin disorder.
  • It periodically improves and worsens.
  • Some affected patients have experienced trigger of symptoms in colder climates.
  • Psoriasis affects all races and sexes equally.
  • Mostly people are diagnosed with Psoriasis in their early adult years.
  • Patients suffering from Psoriasis are more likely to develop diabetes, increased lipids in blood and coronary artery disease for unidentified reasons.
  • It also leads to rupture of joints and causes severe skin inflammation also.
