What is Psoriasis?

Ever heard of the disease Psoriasis? You must have if you are here on this page.

It’s ok even if you haven’t; you can do it now!

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition in which silver grey patches start forming on the skin. These patches initially appear red in color due to inflammation underneath the skin. The areas that are most commonly affected by this disorder are elbows, knees, arms, back and stomach. It is believed to be caused due to an autoimmune disorder within the body but it is does not spread or in precise words, not contagious. People who are already suffering from Psoriasis out of those 100% people a quarter also suffers from Psoriatic arthritis which is quite similar to rheumatoid arthritis. It is also considered a chronic inflammatory skin disease and other then this there are no clearly identified causes of this disorder. Its occurrences are quite episodic as sometimes the skin becomes totally clear and one feels there was no sign of this disease ever but sometimes it comes back in even stronger form. Advanced research conducted by superficial doctors has declared that the disease is not curable but the patients can be eased by following a prescribed routine and through herbal supplements. It causes deeper psychological impacts on the affected patients as they don’t feel confident going out and making social contacts therefore, cannot socialize much and stay home depressed.

What Makes Psoriasis Evident – Symptoms?
This disease is identified through a set of Psoriasis symptoms which make the diagnosis easier and help medical practitioners prescribe right medicine targeting each symptom individually or altogether to get rid of this disorder. Psoriasis symptoms include:
  • Irritated, red, silver-white flaky patches on the skin
  • Red patches on the body, including the scalp
  • Itchy skin
  • Dry skin
  • Pink patches of skin
  • Raised and thick patches on the skin
  • Joint pain confused with arthritis
  • Nail changes, including thick nails, yellow-brown nails, dents in the nail, and nail lifts off from the skin underneath.
  • Severe scalp dandruff
  • White blisters on the surface of the skin
Psoriasis Causes
The exact Psoriasis causes are not known till date even after advance research conducted by experts in the field. Anybody in any age bracket can get affected by this chronic skin condition. People from any race or sex can be a victim of this disease. Some of the researchers have also declared that it usually originates between the age of 15 and 35 but this is not a static age bracket and it can vary. Some of the researchers also believe it is passed onto generations and thus, it is genetic but even that is not cent percent true. Some medical professionals while studying the Psoriasis causes have identified one solid reason that “can” be the cause of this disorder is when the body’s immune system erroneously attacks the healthy skin cells but yet again this too is not the actual cause. Some also believe that it can be caused due to disturbances in the normal functionality of skin cells. According to normal cell functioning the skin cells grow deep inside the skin to rise above to the surface after a month or a period of 28 days but in case of this disorder the process becomes faster and the cells come onto the surface many times before the ascribed period forming a cluster on the skin which appears as dead skin cells.
Some other causes that can originate this disease include:
  • Some bacterial or viral infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Dry air or dry skin
  • Cuts in the skin or injuries
  • Burns
  • Anti-malaria drugs
  • Beta blockers
  • Lithium
  • Stress
  • Too little exposure to sunlight
  • Over exposure to sunlight causing sunburn

Also people who have relatively weaker immune systems due to AIDS, Rheumatoid arthritis and cancer chemotherapy can also develop this skin disorder.
